Mimo Warto (b. 1989) is a third-generation visual artist whose first mentors were their father, a graphic artist, and their grandfather, a visual artist. With them, they developed an early understanding of composition, light, shadow, line, and visual expression.

Warto began as a self-taught visual artist and later enrolled at Alfa Art School, where they studied to become a visual artist from 2023 to 2026. In 2026, they continued their studies in fine art and technology at Lapland University of Applied Sciences.

Since childhood, their imagination has been nourished by the dreamlike fantasy of Labyrinth, Tim Burton’s dark playfulness, H. R. Giger’s compelling menace, and Hayao Miyazaki’s mysterious worlds. Their influence can be seen in a need to build worlds where the beautiful and the strange exist side by side.

Through their art, Warto wants to surprise viewers and make them see a familiar situation in a new way, while also recognising something of themselves in it. Everyone brings their own experiences to an image. One person sees their own wounds in it, another tenderness, absurdity, or shelter. Someone recognises something for which there is no name yet. The same work can therefore mean different things to different people and feel personal, even if it cannot be fully explained.

Warto is interested in how identity, personality, mental health, and experiences manifest in a person, and what remains beneath the surface. In their works, these questions are carried by figures, gestures, and elements of surprise, as well as the psychological tension that arises between them. Experimentation takes this same exploration beyond painting, into new materials and forms of expression.

The works often move along the boundary between safety and threat. In their presence, it can feel as though one is standing beneath something immense. The same form can both press towards the viewer and offer protection. The viewer stands alone before the work, without being entirely alone.

For Warto, an image is successful when it evokes feelings in the viewer, even if they are difficult to put into words. Viewers do not need to understand everything about a work or be able to explain their own reaction. Everyone is free to experience the work in their own way.
